Ranked on odds value, market depth, NZD banking, live betting and sign-up offers.

The best sports betting sites for New Zealanders in 2026 are offshore bookmakers that still accept Kiwi customers, settle in NZD, and price up the sports we love — rugby, NRL, cricket, football and racing.

2025 law change: New Zealand law now restricts offshore operators from advertising to and taking bets from Kiwis, and several big brands (Bet365, Betway, LeoVegas) have withdrawn. The sites below are the ones still openly accepting New Zealand players. TAB NZ remains the only licensed domestic bookmaker — see our TAB vs offshore comparison.

Is online sports betting legal in New Zealand?

Betting is legal in New Zealand, and TAB NZ is the only licensed domestic bookmaker. Offshore sportsbooks are not licensed here, and since 2025 the law restricts them from advertising to and taking bets from Kiwis. Importantly, it is not an offence for an individual New Zealander to place a bet with an offshore book — the legal responsibility sits with operators, not punters.

Because offshore sites aren't regulated locally, you won't have access to a New Zealand dispute process, so stick to reputable operators like those we test.

How we rank NZ betting sites

  • Odds & margins (30%) — we compare real prices on rugby, NRL and football against the market.
  • Markets (20%) — depth on NZ-relevant sports plus bet builders and same-game multis.
  • Banking (20%) — NZD deposits/withdrawals, speed and reliability from NZ banks.
  • Live & mobile (15%) — in-play betting, streaming and app quality.
  • Offer & trust (15%) — sign-up value and licensing.

How to read betting odds (decimal, fractional, American)

NZ books and the TAB use decimal odds. Your return = stake × decimal odds (that includes your stake back). So NZ$20 at 2.50 returns NZ$50 (NZ$30 profit).

DecimalFractionalAmericanImplied probabilityNZ$20 stake returns
2.001/1 (evens)+10050.0%NZ$20 → NZ$40 (NZ$20 profit)
1.501/2-20066.7%NZ$20 → NZ$30 (NZ$10 profit)
3.505/2+25028.6%NZ$20 → NZ$70 (NZ$50 profit)
1.9110/11-11052.4%NZ$20 → NZ$38.20

To convert fractional to decimal: divide the fraction and add 1 (5/2 = 2.5 + 1 = 3.50). Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds — handy for spotting value.

Bookmaker margins & overround (worked example)

Bookmakers build a margin into every market. Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes: a fair market totals 100%; anything above is the book's overround (its edge).

Example — All Blacks vs Springboks, head-to-head at 1.40 and 3.00. Implied probabilities: 1÷1.40 = 71.4% and 1÷3.00 = 33.3%. Total = 104.7%, so the overround is 4.7%. The lower the overround, the better the value — this is why line-shopping across books matters. Sharp offshore books often run 2–5% on rugby; the TAB tends to be higher.

Value betting & expected value (EV)

A value bet is one where your estimated probability is higher than the bookmaker's implied probability. Over time, only value bets win — backing favourites blindly does not.

Expected value: EV = (probability of winning × profit) − (probability of losing × stake). Say you rate a team 55% to win at odds of 2.10. On a NZ$20 bet: (0.55 × NZ$22) − (0.45 × NZ$20) = NZ$12.10 − NZ$9.00 = +NZ$3.10 EV. Positive EV means it's a bet worth making, even if it loses this time.

Staking & bankroll management

  • Flat staking — bet the same amount (e.g. NZ$10) every time. Simple and low-variance; best for most punters.
  • Percentage staking — bet a fixed % of your bankroll (say 2%), so stakes shrink in a losing run and grow when you're ahead.
  • Kelly (simplified) — stake proportional to your edge; powerful but aggressive, so most use 'half-Kelly' to reduce swings.

Golden rules: set a bankroll you can afford to lose, keep stakes to 1–2% of it, never chase losses, and track every bet so you know what's actually profitable.

Sports covered at top NZ sportsbooks

Rugby Union

The headline market — All Blacks Tests, Super Rugby Pacific (Blues, Crusaders, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Highlanders) and the NPC. See our rugby betting guide.

Rugby League (NRL)

Huge in NZ, with the Warriors a favourite and State of Origin a highlight. See NRL betting.

Cricket

Black Caps internationals, plus the Super Smash and global T20 leagues.

Football

The A-League (Wellington Phoenix, Auckland FC), EPL, Champions League and the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Horse racing

Thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing — a NZ staple, offered by offshore books alongside the TAB.

Other sports

Netball (Silver Ferns), basketball (NBA), American football (NFL), tennis, golf, motorsport, UFC/MMA and esports.

Rugby betting markets in depth

  • Head-to-head & handicap — the handicap (line) evens up a mismatch; great value on short-priced All Blacks.
  • First / anytime try scorer — popular on Tests; back a reliable finisher.
  • Winning margin & total points — over/under on combined points.
  • Half-time/full-time and bet builder — combine margin, tries and player markets.
  • Tournament outrights — Super Rugby Pacific, Rugby Championship, Six Nations.

NRL betting markets in depth

  • Line betting — the handicap is the staple NRL market.
  • First / anytime try scorer and player points/tries.
  • Winning margin buckets (1–12, 13+) pay more than head-to-head.
  • Half-time/full-time, total points, and same-game multis.
  • Futures — premiership, minor premiership, wooden spoon, and State of Origin series.

Cricket betting markets (incl. T20)

  • Match winner and tied-match/Super Over markets.
  • Top batter / bowler and player runs/wickets lines.
  • Total match sixes, highest opening partnership and method of dismissal — big in T20.
  • Man of the match and series outrights (Black Caps home summers, T20 leagues).

Football betting markets in depth

  • 1X2 (home/draw/away) and double chance.
  • Both teams to score (BTTS) and over/under 2.5 goals.
  • Asian handicap — removes the draw for sharper pricing.
  • First/anytime goalscorer, corners and cards.
  • Outrights — league winner, top four, and the World Cup 2026.

Horse racing bet types (NZ)

  • Win — back a horse to finish first.
  • Place — top 2 or 3 depending on field size.
  • Each-way — half win, half place in one bet.
  • Exotics — Quinella (first two any order), Exacta (first two in order), Trifecta (first three), First 4.
  • TAB Flexi / percentage betting — stake any amount on an exotic and collect that percentage of the full dividend; a NZ staple offshore books rarely match.

Sports betting markets & bet types explained

Match result (1X2 / moneyline / head-to-head)

The simplest bet: who wins. In rugby and league you can also bet the draw or take the money line.

Handicap / line betting

The favourite is given a points handicap to even the market — great value when a strong team is short-priced.

Totals (over/under)

Bet whether combined points/goals finish over or under a set line.

Both teams to score (BTTS)

Popular in football — will both sides find the net?

Player props

First/anytime try or goal scorer, player points, shots — big for All Blacks and NRL matches.

Bet builder / same-game multi

Combine several markets from one match into a single bet at bigger odds. See our bet builder guide.

Accumulators & multis

Combine selections across matches; all must win, for compounding odds.

Futures / outrights

Season or tournament winners — Super Rugby champion, World Cup winner, Golden Boot.

Live / in-play

Bet as the match unfolds, with odds updating in real time. See live betting.

Cash out

Settle a bet early to lock in a profit or cut a loss before the event finishes.

Bet types explained in depth

Each-way

Two bets in one: half your stake on the win, half on a 'place' (top 2–4, sport-dependent). Common in racing and outright markets.

Accumulators & multis

Combine several selections; all must win and the odds multiply. Four legs at 1.50 each = 1.50⁴ = 5.06, so NZ$20 returns NZ$101 — but one loss sinks the lot.

Same-game multi (SGM)

Combine markets from one match (e.g. team to win + over 2.5 + a player to score). Legs are often correlated, which is why books price SGMs with a bigger margin.

Cash out

Settle a bet early for a value the book offers based on live odds — take a smaller sure profit, or cut a loss. Partial and auto cash-out let you lock in some and let the rest ride.

Live betting, arbitrage & using data

Live / in-play

Odds update in real time. The edge is reacting faster than the book to momentum, red cards, weather or injuries — and the first 15–20 minutes of a match often misprice.

Arbitrage

Backing every outcome across different books to lock a small guaranteed profit. It exists but is hard: margins are thin, stakes get limited, and prices move fast.

Data & xG

Expected goals (xG) and shot data reveal teams over- or under-performing their results — a side winning on luck will regress, creating value against it.

TAB NZ vs offshore sportsbooks — which is right for you?

If you value NZ licensing, easy local banking and supporting Kiwi racing and sport, the TAB is the natural home. If you want the sharpest odds, deepest markets and bigger bonuses, offshore books usually win on value. Many Kiwis use both.

Are sports betting winnings taxed in NZ?

For recreational punters, betting winnings are tax-free in New Zealand — there's no income tax or GST on your wins, including at offshore books. Since 1 July 2024 a 12% Offshore Gambling Duty applies, but that is paid by operators, not by you. Only rare professional-gambling cases attract tax; see our tax guide.

Payments & NZD

All recommended sportsbooks accept NZD. Kiwis sometimes find a card deposit declined by their bank for gambling — in that case, online bank transfer, e-wallets or crypto (BTC/USDT) are the most reliable rails, and crypto withdrawals are the fastest.

How to compare bookmakers like a sharp

  • Odds & overround — the single biggest factor; a few points of margin compounds over a season.
  • Market depth — props, bet builders and niche markets on the sports you actually bet.
  • Limits & tolerance — do they cut winners quickly?
  • Payout speed in NZD, and reliable deposit rails.
  • Live pricing & streaming quality.
  • Fair bonus terms — turnover and minimum-odds you can realistically clear.

Sports betting tips & strategy for Kiwi punters

  • Line shop — compare odds across two or three books; small differences compound over a season.
  • Bet with value, not loyalty — back a price you think is too big, not just your team.
  • Specialise — deep knowledge of one code (say, Super Rugby) beats spreading thin.
  • Use live betting selectively — react to red cards, weather and momentum.
  • Manage your bankroll — stake a small fixed percentage per bet and never chase losses.
  • Track your bets — a simple record shows what's actually profitable.

Sports betting glossary

  • Decimal odds — Return = stake × odds (includes your stake).
  • Implied probability — 1 ÷ decimal odds — the chance the price implies.
  • Overround / margin — How much a market exceeds 100% — the book's edge.
  • Value bet — Odds bigger than the true chance of the outcome.
  • Expected value (EV) — The average profit/loss of a bet over the long run.
  • Handicap / line — A start given to even a mismatch.
  • Accumulator / multi — Several selections combined; all must win.
  • Same-game multi — Multiple markets from one match combined.
  • Bet builder — Build a custom multi within one event.
  • Cash out — Settle a bet early for a live-priced value.
  • Each-way — Two bets: one to win, one to place.
  • Arbitrage — Backing all outcomes across books for a guaranteed profit.
  • Steam / drift — Odds shortening (steam) or lengthening (drift).
  • xG — Expected goals — a shot-quality performance metric.
  • Ante-post / futures — Betting on an outcome well in advance.
