New Zealand's online gambling landscape is changing. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 creates the country's first licensed online casino regime. Here's what it means for Kiwi players, in plain language.
Online Casino Gambling Act 2026: NZ Casino Law Explained for Players
What New Zealand's new licensed online casino regime means for Kiwi players — dates, licences and protections.
What is the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026?
The Act, which came into force on 1 May 2026, establishes a regulated market for online casino gambling in New Zealand for the first time. It is administered by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), which will issue a capped number of licences by auction.
Until now, New Zealand law prohibited domestic companies from offering online casino games, which is why every real-money casino serving Kiwis has been based offshore.
Key dates & facts
- 1 May 2026 — Act in force; framework established.
- Mid-2026 — licence expressions of interest and auction process.
- 1 December 2026 — regime fully live; only licensed operators may serve NZ.
- Up to 15 licences — a hard cap; operators like 888, Betway and Bet365 are reported as interested.
- Player protections — mandatory harm-minimisation tools; credit-card gambling payments banned.
What it means for players
From December 2026, licensed sites will display a registration marker and must offer deposit limits, self-exclusion and other safety tools. Offshore sites without a licence will be restricted from advertising to New Zealanders.
During the transition, offshore casinos continue to serve Kiwis. We track which operators apply for and receive licences and will update our rankings to prioritise licensed sites as the market matures.

Responsible gambling
Gambling should be fun, not a way to make money. Only bet what you can afford to lose, set deposit and time limits, and never chase losses. You must be 18 or older to gamble in New Zealand.
