The following panui (message) is from Wallace Haumaha, National Manager of the Maori Pacific Ethnic Services
Superintendent Police National Headquarters...

Tena koutou katoa e nga rangatira...You may be aware by now that a Recruitment initiative is underway to attract more Maori into the NZ Police. 'Te Haerenga' the Maori Recruitment programme wiil commence on the 17 March 2008 and will cover as many districts as possible at this stage. It will be one of the most significant Maori specific initiatives NZ Police has ever undertaken and with this in mind, we really want to make sure it runs as successfully as possible.

We want as many people with an affinity for our kaupapa to be aware of, and attend the events held around the country. With this in mind, distributing this (online) flyer amongst the networks you have within te ao Maori is going to be of utmost importance. Relevant groups and individuals to send it to would include iwi organisations, kura, friends, sports+cultural clubs, family and others.

We have said that the future will demand that the face of policing should reflect the communities that we police, we intend to start now. On the night, attendees will be given the opportunity to fill out the initial application/clearance forms. The candidates' names will be treated with the utmost respect. We will make a pledge on the spot to do everything we can to give these people a smooth experience as they progress through the recruitment process.

We ask that we work together to make this a success, by October this year we would like to have Maori recruits that will increase the diversity and capability of the organisation to continue the work that has begun.
