According to many of the local "tangata whenua", Kawhia is gradually losing its heritage.

Its all the rules and regulations creeping in, that the council members, many whom have floated into town a few tides ago, strain their brain in thinking up, thats creating just another Auckland suburb, says one local.

Going are the days when youngsters, or anybody for that matter, could stroll through the township on their horse or pony.

According to a report, the council’s Animal Control Contractor, forced a long term resident and passionate horse lady to walk her horse through town.

The new traffic bylaw states: – “No horses or vehicles on footpaths, etc – No person shall ride, drive, lead, propel, wheel or take any vehicle or horse across or along any footpath or berm within the Kawhia or Otorohanga urban areas, except –
a) at an authorised vehicle crossing or
b) with the written consent of Council, or
c) when it is the only practicable thing to do having regard to traffic conditions existing at the
time.
He said therefore that it was in order to ride a horse on the actual roadway.
