A cousin and myself (who shall remain nameless 4 obvious reasons) headed down to ocean beach 2 watch the sun go down as i was heading back to Oz and wanted to take in the last glimpse of Kawhia by the sea.
It was around 3pm on a winters day when we had just arrived so we sat down on top of one of the dunes 2 chat about the future when we both noticed (what we thought was an aeoplanle or helicopter) moving past the sun. We both noticed that the aircraft was moving way too fast to be an aeroplane or a helicopter as it was moving in and around the sun at lightning speed. The object that was madly flying around was a saucer shape and dark in colour and seemed to resemble the mock UFO's that you see on TV. As we were concentrating on this "UFO" time seemed to slip and before we knew it, it was the middle of the night and we were still at the beach in the same possies where we had stopped 2 have a chat.
We both felt like we had only been sitting for 5 minutes but later realized that 3.5 hours had lapsed (we had lost time and don't recall what had happened). Scared and shocked about what we had seen and how the time went by so quickly, we made the dash 4 the car. While running back to the car we could hear weird noises coming from the track ahead. I said to my cousin "this is the only way that we can get back to the car", she replied, "if anything happens to me make sure that you make it & tell others what happened". With fear striken legs we motored back to the car, jumped in, and flew back to my aunties house.
Unable to speak of the incidence that happened strait away we both paused breifly to reflect on what we had seen. Our stories were the same and there was an eery feeling that we had both witnessed something unbelievable.
We told only one person (fear of getting laughed out of town) that person was my aunty. We told her in great detail what we both had seen. Thats were our story ended and it was never spoken of again.

I remember my grandfather talking about a UFO encounter in Kawhia. He was only a young guy and their were four others who witnessed the same thing close-up over at Te Maika. He was absolutely convinced it was aliens.

There are many others who have seen the same thing...Oneday when the time is right, I'll share a very interesting story of an encounter....But at the moment I don't want to be the target of spacey jokes... ...By the way maorigirl, are you a local...

Nah, I'm Ngapuhi from the far North, but I've got whanau connected to Kawhia. Its like my home away from home and I'm even thinking I may even move there oneday. If I can get out of this rut in the city.

Your not alone, my father has seen lights over the hills to the south of Te Maika while fishing at night, he says they were moving horizontally back and forth in a very unusual manner. I was with him one evening, fishing, when over our heads zoomed what I could only think of was a meteor heading in a line from Taharoa to kawhia. The following day heading home there had been a recent scrub fire on the hills outside of town. Not so spooky, but as a family that's been going to Te Maika for years we are well aware of strange things at night there, but still we keep going back, gotta love the place

And all these years, I thought it was just the Te Maikian Gold, responsible for those funny, coloured lights.

Yeah well I've heard that the weed from there is pretty good and most probably responsible for about 99% of your coloured lights, but I have to agree with maikaite, because I've personally witnessed a similar scenario several times, in exactly the same location...

I assure you all our sightings had nothing to do with the local gold, it,s a pity that after seeing such sights most of us prefer to keep the lips zip ed for fear of the "yeah right" factor, so its great to have this forum and share or stories, thank you Kawhia Community Forum.
